Hornady Ammunition 139 Grain SST Ammo Details
Hornady Ammunition was founded in 1949 as a basic two-man operation. From those humble beginnings, Hornady has emerged as a major influence in the ammo industry. The company is well-known for their innovative, high-performance designs, and their Superformance line is no exception. Engineered specifically for deer hunting. Hornady Superformance loads are manufactured with only the finest quality components.
Engineered to increase the long-range performance of your hunting rifle, Superformance delivers an increased muzzle velocity (up to 200 feet per second over conventional ammo) without adding extra chamber pressure, muzzle flash, recoil, or barrel fouling. This Hornady Superformance .280 Remington ammunition produces a consistent muzzle velocity of 3090 feet per second and a muzzle energy of 2946 foot pounds.
Each factory fresh cartridge is loaded with a 139 grain Hornady Super Shock Tip (SST) projectiles. These patented bullets are packed with high-performance features. Topped with a red polymer tip, SST projectiles produce flatter trajectories for improved long-range accuracy. The ballistic tip also initiates terminal expansion that reliably produces massive wound channels in soft tissue.
SST bullets also feature Hornady's proprietary InterLock ring system which solidly “locks” the copper jacket to the bullet’s lead core. The result is impressive weight retention, hard-hitting energy transfer, and serious on-game performance .
This ammunition is non-corrosive, boxer primed, and features high-quality, reloadable brass cases. Each package contains 20 rounds.

I used this load extensively on Mule Deer this past season, and it dropped the three deer I took as if they were hit by lightning. I had a chance to make a Caribou hunt and was able to make it. I had always wanted to use my .280 Rem on Caribou, and could have not been more pleased. I took a nice heavy bodied bull at around 165-170 yards, and the 139 grain Hornady load performed about the same as it had on Mule deer. He was lacking in the palm area a bit, but still a rather heavy bodied bull that supplied some excellent table fare. He required one high lung shot, it took out the chest cavity, and there was certainly some shock trauma to the spine. Although only a 139 grain bullet, it still had the velocity, and power to pass completely through the big fella, always a plus in my book.
Simply stated this is one of the finest factory loads shot through my .280, and Hornady truly outdid themselves on this one. -
