Most homeowners favor 00 buckshot for home defense. It’s a perfectly reasonable choice, seeing as how law enforcement officers also prefer it. Why, then, is this Defense Dynamics 12 Gauge shell by Fiocchi loaded with #1 buckshot? Because it offers multiple distinctive advantages!

The #1 buck pellet is smaller than a piece of double-aught. It is 0.30” in diameter instead of 0.33”, which is why it weighs less (approximately 40.5 grains as opposed to 53.8). This means the #1 buck pellets strikes with less momentum, which in turn lessens the risk of overpenetration that could put bystanders in harm’s way.

This shell is loaded with nine pellets of #1 buck. The shot column weighs a touch less than 7/8 ounces all together, which is why this round is going to produce significantly less recoil than a nine-pellet 00 buck load with the same muzzle velocity. The payoff? Less recoil, and therefore less muzzle flip to compensate for after firing each shot.
