Where Does the Number “.357” Come From?

Like many other cartridges (notably the .38 Special) the .357 Magnum has a neck diameter of exactly 0.379 inches. The “.357” comes from the bullet diameter. This number was selected to make the bullet’s name distinct from the .38 Special, a less-powerful cartridge with the same bullet and neck diameter but a shorter case length.

Can You Shoot .357 Magnum in a Gun Chambered for .38 Special?

The .357 Mag and .38 Special are two highly-similar cartridges, and while almost all of their dimensions are the same, they have one important difference: case length. The .357 Magnum is, essentially, a longer .38 Special. This length allows for more propellant, which means it fires a similar bullet with greater velocity and power. The .38 Special can be fired from guns made for the .357 Magnums, but .357 Magnums cannot be used in guns designed exclusively for the .38 Special. Not only is the case length too long, but the .357 Magnum’s pressure could damage the weapon and cause serious injury. What’s the Difference Between a .357 Magnum and a .357 SIG?

These two cartridges are frequently confused, but they are very distinct and not interchangeable whatsoever.

357 Sig ammunition has a different case diameter. In fact, the two cartridges have completely different shapes, as the .357 Sig has a narrowed neck. Simply looking at the two side-by-side will show you that these cartridges are not interchangeable, despite sharing the “.357” moniker.

Can the .357 Magnum Be Used for Hunting?

Yes. The .357 Magnum is one of the fastest and most powerful common cartridges for handguns, and it can take down medium-sized game with relative ease, assuming proper shot placement. The .357 Magnum, from both handguns and rifles, has been used to harvest whitetail deer, among other game animals. However, even from a rifle it is not recommended for long-range hunting, but rather for closer shots that you would have, for example, while hunting in and around timber. If selecting a .357 Magnum round for hunting, you’ll want cartridges with expanding bullets such as a jacketed hollow point or soft point.

What Firearms Shoot .357 Magnum?

Generally, the .357 Magnum is for revolvers, but there are some semi-automatic handguns that can fire this cartridge. However, these guns are fairly rare among the firearm-owning community; you’re far more likely to find revolvers fitted for .357 Magnum than pistols. There are also some rifles that fire the .357 Magnum, but the cartridge is still primarily considered a handgun/revolver cartridge.

    I moved to 180 gr. Federal Because I didn’t know about this site. I really didn’t believe the people tell me that the 357 mag 158 gr. Would disappoint if used in a rifle. The barrel length was the reason. Once I tried the Federal 180 gr. I was pleasantly surprised! Could not believe the distance achieved by the 357mag 180 gr. I would welcome the 200 gr. & see the performance. Simply put: if one is hunting Deer or Boar, I would not attempt without the correct ammunition.
