The 280 Ackley Improved (aka 280 AI) is what happens when you give the great P.O Ackley a 280 Remington cartridge and let him do whatever he wants to it. By steepening its case’s shoulder, Ackley revved up the 280 Rem’s muzzle velocity by an additional 100 fps. As a hunting round, the 280 AI is just as versatile as the venerable 30-06 Springfield: suitable for hunting all medium game, and quite capable of taking elk with a 140+ grain bullet.
