The 450/400 Nitro Express was introduced in 1899 for hunting large African game. It’s unusual for metallic cartridges owing to its availability in three different case lengths: 2-3/8”, 3” and 3-1/4”. The 3” version is more commonly referred to as the 400 Jeffery Nitro Express, and was popular alongside the longer variant until both were surpassed by the 375 Holland & Holland Magnum.
