45-70 GOVT.

The 45-70 Government (aka 45-70 Govt, or just 45-70) first entered production in 1873. Its name indicates its specifications: .458 cal bullet, 70 grains of black powder (modern 45-70 ammo features smokeless propellant). The original specs called for a 405 grain bullet, although lighter 300 and 325 grain loads are now common. The U.S. Army’s Springfield “Trapdoor” Model 1873 was chambered for this cartridge. It remains a popular hunting round to this day.
